Cash Flow Mojo

White parking stripes lined the street in front of Mason City Bank, but all were filled. Ethel sneered at the cars and wheeled her Dodge toward the small lot behind the building. She swung in a bit too wide and barely nicked the P.O. drop box on the corner. She surveyed the spots, looking for something close to the door. Five cars sat in the lot. Two late-model Civics, both silver, and a burgundy Camry, with a McCain/Palin bumper sticker, parked on the west side of the lot. Boot Jackson’s black Lexus was parked near the back entrance. The vehicle gleamed, radiating opulence. Tinted windows, spotless finish, and a parking place open right beside it. Ethel aimed for the open space, miscalculated the approach, and thudded to a stop against the rear bumper on the driver’s side. She shifted to reverse and eased her car back, the red glass and plastic from Jackson’s taillight crackling to the pavement as she did. Her aim improved on the second try. She took the handicap placard from the glove box, hung it on the rear-view, and slid out, slinging her purse onto her shoulder as she stood.

Inside, she bypassed the tellers and went straight to the assistant’s desk in front of Jackson’s office.

“Boot in?” she asked.

“Yes ma’am,” the assistant answered, “but he’s busy at the moment. If you’ll have a seat,” she pointed toward the leather chairs behind Ethel, “I’ll let him know you’re here, Mrs. Combs.”

Ethel looked toward Boot’s office, noticed the door was cracked open, and said, “No thank you, honey, I’ll show myself in.”

Before the assistant could react, Ethel barraged around her desk and into Boot’s office, closing his door on the assistant’s pleas to “wait.” Boot looked up, briefly startled, then closed the latest copy of Guns and Ammo he’d been reading, and stood to greet her.

“Mrs. Combs, always a pleasure.” He shook her hand, taking it in both of his. “Have a seat, tell me what we can do for you?”

“Don’t you start with that Mrs. shit, Boot Jackson. You ain’t that young.”

He chuckled as they both sat down. “Well, you’re right about that. How’ve you been? How’s your family?”

“I’m right as rain. Family’s still ingrates.”

“Now Ethel, at least one of them was nice enough to bring you to town.”

“Ha. You keep on thinking as much. I drove my damn self here.”

He winced. “I see. Well, what can I do for you?”

“I came to check on my money. I’m thinking on spending some of it.”

“Your money’s fine, Ethel.”

“Can I see it? My money?”

“You never get tired of that one, do you? You know how it works, we have your money, just not in cash, not all of it. Tell me what you have in mind, and I’ll take care of it.”

“And you tell me that every time, but this time I’d like to see it, every damn cent of it, all at once. Come on, bring it out and blow the dust off. Stack it up, let me take a gander at how high the stack reaches.
